While doing prep work for my first two feature films I read many books and articles about the importance of camera movement in regards to creating your vision as a director. This book by Gil Bettman will undoubtedly serve as my camera movement bible for my third feature (and fourth, fifth…). What Bettman manages to do in this book is convey not only why we move the camera, but HOW best to move the camera given the circumstances of the scene.Having made my first two features independently, I know just how expensive a great camera move can be, and how in the world of independent filmmaking you need to “get your money’s worth” out of every camera move you decide to make. The first half of this book focuses on ways to seamlessly create professional and intelligent camera moves that can enhance the quality of any film, whether it is a big budget blockbuster like “Saving Private Ryan” or a simple YouTube video. Throughout his book Bettman reiterates that these camera moves are what audiences have come to expect, and without them your product can seem cheap or poorly made. The second half of the book focuses on directing action sequences. Personally I’ve never directed an action sequence, but there’s no denying that the visual eye candy in the action genre is a major reason as to why audiences keep breaking out their wallets to go to theaters to see these movies. More importantly for me, there was plenty to take from this section that could go into any genre, from comedy straight through to drama and horror. This section focuses on lens choice and story-boarding a great deal, and being cognitive as to what your audience is going to see is something that’s paramount to all genres. Finally, if you’re worried about this book being too technical or wordy, don’t fear! The book plays out like a straightforward lecture. There’s no excess fat, no talking in circles, and no words you won’t understand. It’s a smart book, but it exists to teach. And it excels at doing so.

Some interesting insights backed up with clips to actual scenes from real movies that are analyzed and broken down in the book. I learnt quite a bit. A book I will probably re-read a few times until it all becomes automatic. Nice hints for teachers as well.

Straight forward easy to apply information.

Long story short, I recommend this book, you will find a lot of useful information on directing cameras. But the techniques and rules mentioned are more on the surface and lack of depth in terms of building the design of camera movements upon your materials.

excellent book, I came in very good condition, I recommend it for people quew study film and television remain very happy ... thank you

good textbook. learned a ton!

I am not a DOP so I cannot comment from that point of view however from a Directing point of view I think its this book is invaluable. The set out could have been a laid a bit better and the illustrations are adequate but the general content is excellent.

This is a must read for anyone aspiring to work with a camera.

Novelistic road journeys frequently become spiritual journeys. So it is with Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" (1957)and "The Dharma Bums" and so it is as well with Roland Merullo's novel fifty years after Kerouac's: "Breakfast with Buddha (2007)." We don't have beats, mad sex, and the wildness of Dean Moriarty in Merullo's road novel from the American East to the Midwest. Rather we have a 44-year old successful New York City editor of books about food, named Otto Ringling, happily married, and the father of two lovely teenagers, who is tricked by his sister Cecelia into accepting her guru as his travelling companion on a trip to North Dakota.Otto and Cecelia grew up on a North Dakota farm. Six months earlier, their elderly parents had died in an automobile accident. Otto and Cecelia, who fears flying, were to return to settle the estate and sell the farm. At the last moment, however, Cecelia backs out and substitutes the guru, Volya Rinpoche, instead. Otto is disconcerted with Cecelia's decision to give her half of their parents' estate to Rinpoche as a meditation center. While Otto has become a successful editior, Cecelia makes a precarious living telling fortunes and reading tarot cards. Unmarried, Cecelia has shared her favors generously over the years. Otto understandably regards his sister as flaky and refers to her affectionately as "nutcake."Otto and Rinpoche's trip from New Jersey to North Dakota was to take three days, but it develops into six. Otto is at first annoyed with his companion and tries to show him up as a quack. Nominally Protestant, Otto is basically a skeptic; but he has been bothered since adolescence by questions about the meaning of life and by a vague sense of dissatisfaction. With the death of his parents in a meaningless accident, his questions intensify.Much of the book involves the growing relationship between Otto and the Rinpoche and what each man offers to the other. When Otto loses his temper, the Rinpoche sits back in the car and smiles. Slowly, Otto becomes interested and Rinpoche invites him to ask one question a day at breakfast. When, on the first day, Otto asks the Rinpoche about the meaning of life, the Rinpoche replies by throwing some dirt into a glass of drinking water. He explains that this is the state of the ordinary, distracted mind, and that a concentrated, pure mind may become clear. The teachings become more elaborate as the journey proceeds, and at one point the Rinpoche exhorts Otto to think of the meaning of the Buddha's teaching to strive on and pursue one's own salvation with diligence. Otto, in turn, helps the Rinpoche with his English and also shows him something of the United States in a light that may be new to the Rinpoche, and perhaps to the reader as well.In their time together, Otto learns that spiritual teachings cannot be mastered in days, and the Rinpoche learns that the United States cannot fully be appreciated in days. Besides showing a change in spiritual outlook, much of the journey, as is also the case with Kerouac's journeys, is a paean to the breadth and basic goodness of the United States. In their trip, Otto shows the Rinpoche, the Hershey chocolate factory, a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley field, the Great Lakes, and much else. He takes the Rincpche on a brief cruise on the Chicago River. The two travellers play minature golf and go bowling, to the Rinpoche's delight. In turn, Otto becomes an initially reluctant participant in yoga and meditation, reads the Rinpoche's book called "The Ultimate Pleasure", and attends several teaching sessions at Notre Dame and Madison, Wisconsin along the way. As the journey to North Dakota comes to an end, there is a suggestion that Otto, while not about to abandon his wife, family or career, has made a change in the way in which he understands and will pursue his life. "You have the good life." The Rinpoche says. "Easy life this time, Otto. Do not waste, okay?" (p. 147)The book succeeds due to its ability to combine a serious subject with humor and with lightness of touch. Merullo avoids the tendency to didacticism or preaching. There is a great deal of emphasis of food and gourmandizing in the book. Otto, true to his profession, overeats as the road journey is punctuated by meals at many types of gourmet restaurants. He comes to see something of the limitations of over attachment to food. Otto and the Rinpoche also see and learn from some of the simple good people, an old man at a gas station, a seller of popsicles from a cart, and a clerk at the bowling alley, that help make the United States. This unpretentious, somewhat breezy little novel is both a spiritual and an American journey.Robin Friedman

I really enjoyed this new take on finding "the path". The idea of a road trip that pairs up a middle class, New Yorker with a Buddhist monk is unique and makes for an interesting and well-developed plot and set of characters. In essence, the son of recently deceased parents is called upon to journey back to his North Dakota plains, farming roots to settle the estate for those who remain in his family. His intended sidekick will be his sister, a 60's hippie chick. Thus the narrator sets out, away from his middle class, New York life, complete with loving wife and two "normal" teenaged children, to collect his airy-fairy, touchy-feely kid sister. For a week or so, the brother and sister will drive cross-country, in the quest to sell off the family farm and their history, where they grew up, under the taciturn and rigid eye of their no-nonsense parents. Two siblings couldn't be any more different, yet the same. When the main character arrives at this sister's decrepit home in Paterson, New Jersey, the anti-thesis of his life in the Big Apple's suburbs, he is confronted with the realization that his sister will not accompany him westward. Rather a large, Russian monk, clad in maroon robes, is destined to ride in the shotgun seat, during the trip back west and back in time.As the odd couple heads out, the brother gives in to his sister's request and accepts that his traveling companion will be part of his life for the coming week. In accepting the presence of the lama, the narrator and becomes upbeat and intent on showing off the "real America" that is so close to his heart, yet so confusing with its modern ironies and conflicts. The monk is similarly compelled to show the driver a parallel world that some describe as "the way".As the miles, sights and days roll by, the pair begin to teach one another, through a series of chance encounters and places, that life and times in America can be seen as good, bad or indifferent to those who experience them. Not to give the plot away, one could say that in the end, many truths are made clear to all those involved in the storyline. Acceptance is revealed. And hope for a darkening world is lightened by the existence of a higher being. Who that is remains unclear. But "the way" is described as never clear, except to those of find it, in their own way. This is a very entertaining and provocative read. Having the narrator discover basic truths about himself and about unknown, farflung worlds is a clever format through which to meander for as long as one is engrossed in this novel. For those who are interested in world religions and diverse cultural beliefs and mores, this tale is for you. Who knows what is possible in this ever-confusing and ever-conflicted world?!

This review is not at all about the content. This is about the physical quality of the paperback volume as I received it. The cover is fine. The pages are printed on a far from white and a little like newspapers but not that bad, but cheap not a bit smooth or hard. The worst part is the type density. Grey not black. The result is an unpleasant read. Need to concentrate on what is on the page. May be they were running out of ink or toner on my copy. Poor contrast. Cherry Books says I pay return shipping plus 15% restocking so I 'll keep it. As to content. Again I have to hear about HP and Apple starting in garages. Maybe a hundred times now. Book cover states THE NEW INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. How new? Not so new. Ford started in a family shed. The Wright brothers. Thomas Edison. Alexander Bell. Enough said?

This is a good book on an interesting topic. I run cabinet shop in Toronto and have been prattling to my wife about the remaking of the industrial revolution for a few years now. Anderson sums up many of these themes with lots of interesting stories in an easily readable style. I think there are a few things worth adding. First while digital fabrication technology is amazing it is only as useful as the people using it. A cnc router won't make you a good cabinet maker any more that a word processor will make you a good writer or a digital synthesizer will make you a good musician. A synthesizer enables a good musician to become a whole orchestra almost instantly. But a bad musician still sounds like a bad musician and a bad writer is just as annoying as ever to read. What these technologies do is allow the talented craftsman, musician, writer to be more productive than ever, and also lower the barriers to entry for the people with talent who are not part of the established social hierarchy. In my own shop I don't have my own cnc equipment. When I take on a project like a kitchen, I simply email lists of parts (doors, drawers, carvings) to fabricators not far from my shop and in some cases the parts come back to me the next morning. My suppliers don't stock inventory, they fabricate the parts digitally and so they can produce whatever I want in whatever sizes I want. This is the easy part of my job. The hard part getting the clients to decide on what they want, and figuring out how to fit everything they want into the space they have on their budget. To use a car analogy most clients want something like a "Hummer/Lamborghini/Porsche/Lexus/Rolls" for the price of a Focus. They often send me 3d cad drawings of their dream kitchen. It is nearly always like those famous drawings by Escher. At first glance they seem very geometrically precise, but they can't exist in 3 dimensional reality. Squaring this circle is always a challenge, and demands a combining the skills of an expert cabinet maker with those of a psychotherapist. The second hard part of my job is fitting cabinets which are always made to be regular shapes into old real houses which are never square or level. Accomplishing this task demands the skills of an expert finish carpenter, tricks that I learned from my grandfather. In short to be a cabinet maker in the digital age you still need all the skills of a traditional cabinet maker. However what digital technology and advances in new technology in general mean is that small shops can now compete with large factories in a way they couldn't 30 years ago. I can now offer my clients anything that large factory kitchen manufacturers could in the past. For example, 30 years ago complex cabinet door styles could only be made custom at great expense using traditional cabinet shop tools or economically in large batches at big factories. Now I can order 1 door if I need it economically. And, I can beat mass production companies hands down in terms of service and speed. In many cases I can also compete with mass producers on cost. This is because I have lower transaction costs. One of the things that frightens small scale producers is the fact that labour costs of small scale production can't compete with mass production particularly if the goods can be produced in places like China. People say "They make that thing in China for $5, how can I compete". However, if the small scale producer sells locally they don't have to compete with the $5 labour cost in China; they only have to compete with the $50 or $100 retail cost in their local market. The goods that are produced in China have a long list of transaction costs associated with them: transportation, wholesaling, retailing, packaging, inventory, obsolescence, corporate expenses and profit, mass market advertising and promotion. All these costs mean that the widget that is produced for $ 5 needs to sell for $ 50 or $ 100 to make a profit. This leaves lots of room for local artisans to make a living, as long as they keep their transaction costs down. Anderson points out the digital crowd is rediscovering actual reality. I think he does not go far enough in this. People like actual reality. One of the things little noted in the frenzy of the digital revolution is the success of the Home Depot retail model. 30 years ago building materials was a virtual business. Materials were stored in warehouses to which customers both commercial and retail had no access. Most businesses would simply phone the supplier, say what they wanted and give an account number or use a visa and it would be delivered, much like ordering things online but over the phone. Even if you went to a lumber yard, you would usually go to a desk and order things and they would be brought out to you. Home Depot changed all this by putting everything on open shelves so people could go in a play with it. The builders supply became playground for handy people. At the height of the virtual revolution, Home Depot took over the market for home building supplies by `going actual'. I find this in my own business. While the web is a good way to get my name out, showing people real physical samples is the best way to close a sale. After a visit I always make sure I leave a potential customer with a few samples to play with. This way my brand sits on the kitchen table while they are trying to come to a decision. All this points to the possibility of a business model that Anderson hints at, but does not really explore; the return of the traditional neighborhood artisan. A few hundred years ago if you wanted a pair of shoes, or a coat or a piece of furniture you went to a shoemaker, or a tailor or a cabinet maker and told them what you wanted and they made it for you. There was personal contact between the producer and the consumer, you could touch and feel the materials and say what you liked. People could take pride in their work and see the smiles on the faces of happy customers. This was a world wiped out by mass production. Huge production runs meant the artisan could not compete with mass produced goods. But mass production brought its own costs. The producer and the consumer became separated by a huge faceless corporate distribution system, which pretended to care, but most suspected really didn't. This was partially documented by Marx as worker alienation. The flipside, consumer alienation, is perhaps best documented by Monty Python. Mass production also brings with it a whole host of transaction costs, noted above, which make it not as cheap as it might at first appear.New production technology offers the possibility of changing all this. When I go to a shoe store it is always a frustrating experience. I always want some combination of style and size that they never seem to have in the back. Imagine however if a shoe store had say 50 or 100 basic shoes that you could try on for size and fit, as well as some other samples that you could use to pick the styles. With the help of an expert shoemaker you could try on the fitting samples until you found something comfortable. Then you could use the style samples to mix and match all the colour and style details that fit your taste. This shoe store would not have a big warehouse of boxes in the back but some rolls of material as well as some cnc cutting and printing machines and specialized assembly tools. Depending on the complexity of the order you could go and have a coffee and then come back and pick up your order, or maybe come back the next day. This shoe store would give you exactly what you want as well as have some real cost benefits. There would be no packaging cost, low inventory costs, and much lower transportation costs. (Compressed rolls of material are much cheaper to transport and store than packaged finished good). Many of these cost reductions would also be environmental benefits, such as less packaging and transport. And worker and consumer alienation would be a thing of the past. This is how I run my cabinet shop and I think it has great potential. Sign shops already work on this model. Perhaps the mall of the future could look like the high street of old, with shoemakers, tailors and furniture makers crafting what you want when you want them. The digital world provides the infrastructure and the tools, but the purchasing process would be actual and face to face. The best of both worlds maybe?(I also wrote a doctoral dissertation at Oxford which was in large part about the relationship of the world of things to the world of symbols, so I have also been interested in these problems from a philosophical perspective. My examiners, postmodernists who don't believe in outdated concepts like `reality', didn't take kindly to it.)

I am a fanI am a huge fan of Chris Anderson. Both "The long tail" and "Free" are great reads andTruly thought provoking. Both, but particularly "Free" is a book we use regularly with clients. The question asked is "what happens if your service will become available for free (which it will)?Talk about throwing a fox into a chicken den.Digital disruptionA few weeks ago we used "Digital disruption" as a way to explain to a client the speed of innovation. We are now talking overnight, Big Bang disruption, by Coder dojo trained entrepreneurs using free tools, utilising global platforms, using shared IP, open source and community principles as a key features to compete with the big boys (and winning). In "digital disruptions" there are a few references to the "making community" and how that will be the next wave of disruptions. "Making" as the new black.MakersAnd presto, a few weeks later there is Chris Anderson with "Makers, the new industrial revolution". Another cracking book about how the same principals that transformed the ICT world is going to transform the manufacturing world.Must readA book that should be read by any policy maker in the area of entrepreneurship, SME policy and economic development. Will be sending Richard Bruton a copy.Digitised DIYDigitised DIY, where the need for economy of scale no longer applies, bottom up, highly networked, open source, with access to all the production tools you need with a single click of a mouse. Where the long tail of things creates millions of opportunities for small local businesses. The one-size fits all approach of the large manufactures no longer need to apply. You can make small batches at compettive prices. Scale is no longer an issue.Jump on the bandwagonFrom an entrepreneurial perspective, the maker movement is where ICT was in 1985. You can already predict where this is going, apply the lessons and get on the bandwagon. But it also behest on the education system to jump on the same train and teach making. We need a 3D printer in every school.3D printingWhich brings us to printers. Remember the dot-matrix printer? That is where 3D printing is now. Now you have a small printer on your desk, printing HD colour pictures. That is where 3D printing is going. In materials, biology and DNA. For 99 Euro per printer.Killing giantsOpen source hardware, with no patent protection, shared by a community of passionate, people. For the large manufacturers it is going to be very hard to beat that. Open source innovation is cheaper, faster, better researched and already has a head start in market research, marketing and support. With social capital and your eco system the new marketing tools. With word of mouth automatically build in. With a lot of emphasis on branding and trademarking.Loosing the talent warAnd because it is driven by passion, it will attract the best talent from all over the world, working together. Try to beat that as a company. The long tail of talent and the need for a drastic relook on the way your organise your business. Which brings us to books such as "Loose" or "The connected company".No barriers to entrySo as a company you are now loosing on economy of scale, IP, marketing, talent and passion. Maybe finance as the last barrier to entry? Alas that is why they invented crowd funding. Which even reinforces all the above. The market research, the selling, the word of mouth, the social media, the story telling, the community, the speed to market, the channel, the distribution and the beginning of what Brian Solis calls the dynamic customer journey and constant feedback loop (from "What is the future of business" #WTF).Spot onChris Anderson has been spot on with his earlier books and I think he is spot on with "Makers". From a policy perspective, from an educational perspective and from a personal perspective. This movement can transform economies, people and allow you to finally follow your passion.

The Retreat of Western Liberalism is the book I've been waiting for. Its sweep takes in America, the UK and continental Europe and highlights the structural forces that's ailing the middle classes across all those countries. Other books focus only on America, or Brexit Britain, or the French far right. Luce's work stands back from the particularities and brings out what is threatening the west in general. The writing is pacy and engaging. The analysis is acute and the forecast is troubling. As Luce argues, western liberalism is in retreat but that does not mean that it has collapsed. It is up to us - the readers - to do something about it. I couldn't recommend this book more highly. Five stars.

Edward Luce is the Washington correspondent for the Financial Times. This is a short book, about 55,000 words. Luce summarizes what is ailing the West, and makes a few suggestions for the future. He is much better at identifying problems than finding solutions. I have enjoyed two of Luce’s earlier works, but I was a bit disappointed with this one. The book’s title is a little misleading. He is not referring to liberalism in an American sense, but liberal democracy. In the first part of the book he covers a lot of familiar ground. China and India are on the rise. The West is in relative decline. The American model has been successful in that more people are being lifted out of poverty than at a faster rate than at any time in human history. However, the American world order is starting to unravel. Most countries see the benefits of capitalism but they don’t necessarily want democracy. Many countries appear happy with their authoritarian leaders. Trump seems to have acknowledged that this is the reality. Luce believes that the “reckless” foreign wars of George Bush have damaged America’s influence abroad, and its ability to promote democracy. China is not democratic yet it has the world’s largest economy in PPP terms. China is unlikely to want to inherit America’s global role. Luce predicts that the result is likely to be chaos. Luce provides a long rant about Donald Trump and he suggests that a war with China may come about because Trump is an idiot.Mark Mazower, a professor at Columbia University, wrote “Dark Continent” in 1999. He argued that the 20th century in Europe was a battle between three rival ideologies: communism, fascism, and liberal democracy. He concluded that most of Europe did not have much experience with democracy prior to 1945, so it was not inevitable that liberal democracy would win out. It was a consequence of who won WW2. He believed that Europeans could have lived happily under authoritarian leaders and that it was democracy which was an aberration. He seems to have be proved right in Russia, Turkey, Hungary and Poland. Luce suggests that authoritarianism may be about to become the global norm. However, we have been here before. In 1980, half of Europe and much of Asia was communist.Luce writes about the decline of the Western middle class. Sending jobs overseas has benefited China, Mexico and Poland but it has reduced the standard of living of ordinary people in the West. The wages of Americans have stagnated since the 1970s and they have less job security. In an interview, Luce claimed that in 2000, 30% of Americans categorized themselves as lower class, but by 2016 that had reached 49%. Social mobility is now lower in the U.S. than it is in the UK. He suggests that when people don’t share in economic growth or are excluded from the affluence around them, this can become dangerous for societies and usually produces instability.Luce recognizes that globalization has created problems for ordinary people, but he also maintains that globalization is inevitable and resistance is futile. He discusses Brexit and accepts that the EU is undemocratic. Some of what it proposes, like the European Arrest Warrant, is at odds with ancient British liberties. However, most Europeans don't seem to mind. He also observes that poorer people often value democracy more than the rich and the elite. The main objective of the EU is to create a federal super state, a United States of Europe, without the democratic checks and balances. Some of its proposals have proved disastrous, like the single currency. The EU currently has a population of 508 million and it wants to expand to include Ukraine, the Balkans and perhaps Turkey. EU citizens can live and work anywhere in Europe and that became an issue in Britain. Britons eventually discovered that they were supposed to regard national sovereignty as a thing of the past. Many Britons began to object and Brexit became an attractive option for the growing number who did not like what the EU was becoming. Leaving became the only option because Britain could not find allies who shared its concerns. Luce works for an editor at the Financial Times who is a well known EU supporter, so he probably has to be careful what he says, but he does point out some of the EU's flaws.Luce believes that the rich and the left are starting to become disenchanted with democracy. He describes the extraordinary inequality levels and views it as a new Gilded Age. With growing inequality, the rich start to get nervous and begin to fear the mob. One New York billionaire suggested to Luce that there should be competence tests for voters, only well-informed people should have the right to vote. The left has also begun to despise the working classes. If you read the commentators in London’s left of center Guardian, many seem to believe that ordinary people are not qualified to vote on issues like Brexit. The left in the U.S. and the UK have created rainbow coalitions which have left out the traditional white working classes. The left has been taken over by people from elite universities. They have little in common with the often socially conservative white working classes, whose views on immigration are often regarded as racist by liberals. Politicians like Bill Clinton and Tony Blair chose to abandon poor white people in the 1990s. Obama bailed out Wall Street but not the ordinary people who had their houses foreclosed. The Democrats now receive large donations from Wall Street and Silicon Valley, so their interests have changed.Luce has fun with Hillary's clueless election campaign. The Democrats believed that they had demographics on their side. They forgot that immigrants become like everybody else once they stay long enough. They can even morph into Republicans. Luce believes that by abandoning the politics of solidarity with the white working classes Democrats have shot themselves in the foot. Poor whites have turned to people like Trump because he is the only person who will listen to them. Luce does not see Trump or populist nationalists in Europe, like Marine Le Pen, as the causes of today’s crisis in democratic liberalism but rather as symptoms. Luce does not believe that Trump and Brexit are one-offs, they represent dissatisfaction with the status quo. He argues that Washington is out of touch, since 91% of D.C. voted for Hillary. What is to be done? Luce’s solutions are underwhelming. He calls for a Marshall Plan for the middle classes. This mostly involves retraining the people who lose their jobs because of globalization. He uses Denmark (population 6 million) as an example. He wants an increase in investment in education. He argues for a stronger safety net and universal health care. He complains about inequality but does not want to increase wealth distribution because that would be bad for growth. However, the thirty years after WW2 were great for America and its middle class. The top tax rate during the Eisenhower era was 91%, while the economy grew by 37% during the 1950s. If ordinary workers have more money to spend on goods and services that will generate economic growth, the very rich tend to stash their money offshore.Where the U.S. differs from Denmark is that it is big enough to change the rules of the game. It can make things happen rather than just react, like Denmark. These days, getting agreement on what needs to be done is a serious issue. Luce wants to look at gerrymandering because he argues that House representatives choose their voters. However, not enough people in the major parties seems to care enough about the white working class to resolve their problems. The growth of AI and the rise of the robots are likely to make things worse. He mentions that over 50% of current jobs can soon be done by machines. If we want to avoid becoming a feudal society, we need to first admit we have a problem.

Mr. Luce identifies disappearance of the middle and working classes as the chief driver of overall decline. While this position is inextricably linked to classical Marxist economics, the author seems to consider that perspective irrelevant. I'd have to disagree; Marx is today the elephant in the room. Glancing back fifty years, the author sees decline originating with the 'sixties counter-culture. Apart from the goofy fashion statements, silly hi jinx, and bad poetry, I'm inclined to grant the hippies a "not proven." It was with the Carter administration ten years afterward that things went awry: It was during his watch that the deregulation which gained momentum under his successors began. This is a root cause of a lot of suffering today. The author is also drawn off the scent by a red herring - opioid addiction. It is alcohol addiction that is (still) the prime source of social and economic misery, disease, disability, and lethal accidents. And it's legal.Income inequality is a subject Mr. Luce discusses at length: He cautiously endorses education as a vital element in reducing it, and he sensibly suggests that the trades be encouraged as education goals alongside traditional degrees. There are problems with this prescription. The political correctness which began to influence higher education back in the 1990s now dominates it. Thought and inquiry are straitjacketed. If evidence is required to substantiate this, one need only page through college course offerings and requirements. Most undergraduates today are obliged to navigate curricula that are orthodox, perverse, and jaundiced. If they dissent, they are in trouble. Largely to blame for this is invertebrate and opportunistic management. When journalist Philip Delves Broughton described American campuses "...as places where young people struggle rather than thrive", he was vastly understating the case. The price paid by students and their families for a degree whose quality wouldn't have passed muster even twenty years ago is crippling and unjust. Drug abuse, prescription and otherwise, binge drinking, sexual assault and homicides have always existed on campus, it's just that now it's gotten a lot worse, especially for women. Much of this is enabled by image-conscious management which keeps most of it secret. This despite legislation requiring full disclosure of crime statistics. On average, it takes six years for an undergraduate to complete a bachelor's degree. For many students that means six years of living with Mom and Dad, working low-skill jobs, and commuting long distances to campus. During this time, calamitous debt is frequently established while employment, experience, opportunities, and earnings are sacrificed. Is the college campus a supportive learning environment? And can what's taught there help in narrowing income inequality? In the great majority of cases, I think notWith respect to global politics, the near-future scenario Mr. Luce offers his readers strikes me as credible: Vladimir Putin brokering a ceasefire between the US and China might at first glance seem a little far-fetched. But when one considers conditions in the South China Sea, and Mr. Trump's belligerent tirades, it becomes more convincing. Which leads one to consider the merits of democracy. Presidents Erdogan, Trump, Orban and Duterte make for a pretty scary quartet, and that's not the worst of it. Like he says, the future's not what it used to be.Mr. Luce maintains that President Trump channels anger. Mr. Luce channels despair. It's seldom one reads a book that is so unrelenting in its pessimism. Highly recommended.

I thought Mr. Luce's previous book, "Time to Start Thinking" was disturbing. Then I began this one and it made the previous volume seem positively Pollyannaish. His dissection of the American and general Western political climate is spot on, and his extrapolation of the possible outcome of Mr. Trump's "leadership"is frighteningly plausible. And then he points out that, "...as Winter follows Autumn...", he fears what and whom follows Trump even more. And I'll be damned if I can come up with any sort of argument to refute his reasoning. It's a good reminder that good people of conscience must remain vigilant and prepared to take peaceful action to both resist the creep of autocracy, but also to rebuild the social compact that binds a nation together. It is our responsibility to be brave, to be strong, and to foster the trust that is the foundation of a free society.
